About Sussex Rural Electric Cooperative
Your cooperative was founded in 1937 as part of the Rural Electrification Program enacted by the Roosevelt Administration. President Roosevelt was inspired to create the program when he discovered many rural homes did not have electricity. Growing up in a city where everyone had power, President Roosevelt realized that access to affordable electricity for all Americans was essential to long term growth and prosperity.
A cooperative form of organization was selected because it removed the profit requirement that had prevented existing investor owned utilities from expanding service into remote areas. With the ownership of the company placed in the hands of the customers, decisions made would be based on quality, reliability and affordability of electric service rather than upon a rate of return for remote stockholders. The electric cooperative represents one of the most successful private / public partnerships in America.
Today, we proudly serve more than 12,000 families and businesses in Sussex County New Jersey and Orange County New York.
