Your actual usage and appliances may vary greatly from these averages.
If you have an appliance that is not listed, you can easily calculate
the cost to operate for a month (or day) using the following formula:
watts X number of hours used X 30 days / 1000 = kilowatthours
per month X .110713 cents = Cost-To-Run
For example: (1) 100 watt light bulb X 4 hours per day X 30 days
= 12,000 / 1000 = 12 kWh X .110713 = $1.33 per month.
Air Cleaner: 50 kWh is a very
efficient unit. Some are 1500 watts which would equate to 1080 kwh per
month. Back
Clothes Dryer: Expect to pay about
45 cents per load electric and 3 cents per load propane. The new energy
efficient dryers cut drying time to about 30 minutes and therefor reduce
cost to about 22 cents per load. Back
Dehumidifier: Will cost between
$15 - $45 per month depending on usage. If emptied every day, the cost
is towards the higher end. Back
Dishwasher: 145 kWh is for daily
useage with no dry cycle using water heated in an electric water heater.
The kWh drop to 45 is using water heated by oil or proprane. Back
Fan: A ceiling fan would cost between $3 -$6 per month running 24/7. Back
Freezer: Manual units are quite
efficient. Newer units will run about 30 kWh per month. Back
Furnace: These systems will have
the fan run on "auto" or "continuous". It could cost between $15 - $45
/ mo. to operate based upon run time. Back
Hot Tub: The price can be extreme
if they are located outside in the winter. We have seen operating costs
of $150! Ask dealer if they know the wattage of the heating element
and use the cost to operate formula to figure out cost to run. Figure
about $20 / mo. in the summer and $40 - $80 / mo. in the winter. Back
Heater, Electric: Portable electric
heaters are usually 1500 watts. Baseboard electric is normally 250 watts
per foot. Back
Humidifier: A hot steam unit will
cost almost $30 per month. Back
Jacuzzi Tub: If the tub has an
integral heater, add 1500 watts for every hour the tub runs. Back
Light Bulb: This is the kWh one
100 watt bulb would consume if used 4 hours per day, 7 days per week. Back
Microwave: Quanitity number will
be the number of persons in th house that use the appliance. Back
Personal Computer: On 24/7 but actually
used 1 hour daily. "Sleeping" = 23 to 50 watts per hour, "in use" =
250 to 300 watts per hour. Back
Range: Assume 600 watts / hour
for a small burner & 800 watts / hour for a large. Back
Refrigerators: In general, all refrigerators
listed are assumed to be in very good working order. The older they
are, the less frequently you should hear them cycle. Back
Television, Color:This calculation is for a typical 19 - 25 inch set, which uses 180 watts per hour. 36" sets and high, including projection & plasma use higher wattages and thus cost more. Back
Water Bed Heater: When working overtime - for example, in a cold room with an uncovered bed, can be as much as $50 per month! Back
Water Heater (electric): Many assumptions are made and actual cost can vary greatly. If you constantly run out of hot water, your unit runs more & costs more. This also assumes one 10 minute shower each daily. Back
